Global University Systems acquires University of Applied Sciences Europe and HTK Academy of Design

Amsterdam, 16 April 2018 – Global University Systems B.V. (GUS) today announced the acquisition of two German institutions – the University of Applied Sciences Europe (UE) and the HTK Academy of Design – from Laureate Education, Inc.

The UE University of Applied Sciences Europe is a prominent state-accredited higher education provider in Germany, with three campuses in Berlin, Hamburg, and Iserlohn. Through its faculties, the UE University of Applied Sciences Europe offers courses in business, art and design, media and communications, as well as sports management and psychology. It combines creativity, entrepreneurship & technology under one roof on an international level – competencies which are in high demand in today’s and tomorrow’s world of work.

HTK Academy of Design, founded in Hamburg in 1987 and also based in Berlin since 2001, is Germany’s largest private vocational academy in Graphic Design and has the status of a state-accredited‚ Private Berufsfachschule’ in Hamburg and of a Ergänzungschule (supplementary school) in Berlin. HTK has trained thousands of communication designers in the key areas of Visual Communication: Advertising Design, Digital Media, Editorial Design and Illustration.

Aaron Etingen, Chief Executive Officer of Global University Systems, said: “I am delighted to enhance our presence in Germany with the addition of the UE University of Applied Sciences Europe and HTK Academy of Design to the Global University Systems network of institutions. We look forward to working with the institutions and supporting their growth and development, whilst strengthening our presence in Europe with the three additional campuses in Germany.”

GUS has an established presence in Germany with GISMA Business School, with campuses in Berlin and Hannover. Founded by former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, GISMA has gone on to become one of only two business schools in the country to offer triple-accredited programmes (AMBA, AACSB, EQUIS) through its collaborations with leading European institutions such as Grenoble Ecole de Management, Porto Business School, SDA Bocconi, University College Dublin, The University of Law and Arden University.

“The solid growth of GISMA Business School and our activities in Germany proves that there are many exciting opportunities in the country. By acquiring UE, one of Germany’s best known private universities and one of the well-regarded universities worldwide in international orientation according to U-Multirank, we will be able to widen our connections with some of the biggest corporations. These synergies will not only benefit our institutions, but will most importantly improve our students’ chances for their future careers,” added Mr Etingen.

“Both UE and HTK have strong reputations for industry linkages and customized programmes offerings based on market needs. We believe both institutions will be well-positioned under GUS, due to its track-record and commitment to industry-relevant qualifications,” said Eilif Serck-Hanssen, Chief Executive Officer of Laureate Education, Inc.

Global University Systems is Europe’s largest international education group made up of a number of prestigious institutions, offering a broad range of professional, vocational, graduate, and postgraduate programmes to c.50,000 students each year from around 150 countries.
