OIJ’s Initiative: Sustainable Development Education Closing the Digital Gap in Ibero-America

On September 20, 2023, a landmark event titled ‘Education for Sustainable Development: Closing the Digital Divide in Ibero-America’ unfolded, jointly organised by the International Youth Organization for Ibero-America and Global University Systems. Leaders and experts convened to address persistent educational and digital gaps in the region. The agenda prioritized partnerships for quality education (SDGs 4 and 17), reducing inequalities (SDG 10), and fostering economic growth (SDG 8).

Distinguished panellists, including Aaron Etingen, CEO of Global University Systems; Max Trejo, Secretary-General of the International Youth Organization for Ibero-America; Almudena Fernández, Chief Economist for the Bureau of Latin America and the Caribbean (UNDP); Zulmit Rivera, Minister of Youth of the Republic of Honduras; and Florencia Taboada, Minister of Youth of the Republic of Paraguay, shared insights on inclusive education, skill development, and digital transformation.

Crucial discussions emphasised the need for inclusive, safe, and healthy educational facilities, recognizing education's role in empowering youth. The spotlight on digital transformation explored strategies to close the digital gap and enhance access to education. Financing education was a recurrent theme, with a focus on innovative models to strengthen educational infrastructure.

The event transcended discussion, culminating in a commitment to close educational and digital gaps through intersectoral and international collaboration. The meeting's transformative impact, fuelled by visionary leaders and experts, positions the region for a future of accessible education, comprehensive sustainable development, and collective commitment.
