UCW’s MBA Games team wins first place at national MBA Games

From Friday 5 to Sunday 7 January, University Canada West’s MBA Games team competed and took first place at the national MBA Games. The competition, hosted by Brock University in Niagara Falls, featured 16 of Canada’s leading business schools, including the University of Alberta, Simon Fraser University and Dalhousie University.

Over the weekend, students participated in a series of challenges centred around the theme of ‘Transcend: Above and Beyond.’ These challenges were designed to push boundaries and establish new benchmarks, aimed at reshaping the future of business and society.

The UCW team achieved outstanding success in the sports category, winning all dodgeball games and two of the three basketball matches. Additionally, the team secured second place overall in the spirit competition and distinguished themselves as the highest fundraisers, partnering with Ivey School of Business to raise $14,000 of the $37,000 raised for the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) Recovery College Program.

Urvish Subodh, MBA Games team head coach and UCW faculty, said: “To participate in top competitions such as the national MBA Games is a privilege for us at University Canada West. After finishing fourth in our first time at the competition in 2023, we came back with a ton of experience and the aim to bring home the prestigious Queen’s Cup.”

Uzma Khan, team Co-Captain said: “The intense competition beautifully showcased our team’s resilience, strategic acumen and unwavering determination. This triumph, following our win at the 2023 BC MBA Games, reaffirms our unwavering commitment to excellence. From humble beginnings in local competitions to the pinnacle of national success, our journey epitomizes passion, teamwork and an indomitable spirit.”

Jim Isaac, team Co-Captain, said: “There are dreams, and then there is reality. Very few times in life do both become one. It was a great honour to lead a team that would win the BC MBA Games, and it was a dream come true to lead a team that would bring home the Queen’s Cup. Our team has won a competition that brought together many of the top business schools in Canada that, on average, have existed for over 50 years. It is no ordinary feat and a testament to the role that UCW will play in shaping the business world in Canada and internationally.”

The team celebrated their victory on Wednesday 10 January with a special event where they displayed their trophies and discussed their experiences with UCW’s President & Vice-Chancellor, Dr Bashir Makhoul, and members of UCW’s executive team.

UCW was also victorious at the 2023 BC MBA Games in December, taking the top spot in all three categories – Sports, Spirit and Case – making UCW the first university to hold both trophies at the same time in the history of the national and BC MBA Games.

The MBA Games is Canada's largest business case event for MBA students from all over the country. It combines academic challenges, athletic competitions, and community spirit, promoting charity and social responsibility while offering valuable networking opportunities for professional and academic growth.
