AI in higher education takes centre stage at GUS Academic Summit 2025

Last week, more than 80 academics from leading GUS institutions gathered in Berlin for the GUS Academic Summit 2025. Hosted by UE, Gisma, and BSBI, the two-day hybrid event themed: Empowering Future Generations with Artificially Intelligent-Driven Education for Sustainable Development.
Hosted by Prof Dr Iris Lorscheid, Vice-President for Research at UE, and Prof Dr Peter Konhaeusner, Vice-President Academic at Gisma, the summit featured keynote addresses, workshops, and over 40 presentations. Discussions spanned topics such as ethical AI, immersive virtual learning environments, and the integration of AI to improve student engagement and academic success.
Prof Lorscheid noted that Artificial Intelligence is reshaping the educational landscape with real, tangible change in how students learn and institutions operate, and stated that the summit brought together diverse perspectives essential for building responsible, inclusive, and innovative academic ecosystems, moving beyond future potential to present reality.
Prof Dr Maurits van Rooijen, Chief Academic Officer of GUS, underlined the strategic importance of such gatherings: “Academic collaboration and innovation in AI are critical to maintaining excellence across our global network. This summit exemplifies how we can collectively lead the way in shaping the future of education.”
A key highlight of the summit was the recognition of the new GUS Fellows, celebrating academic excellence and leadership across the network.
Prof Peter Konhäusner emphasised that bringing their global academic community together was vital to ensure they’re actively shaping AI developments for future learners rather than merely reacting to them.
The GUS Academic Summit continues to stand as a flagship event for academic dialogue, innovation, and global cooperation in higher education.
