The University of Law’s latest podcast features Former UK Justice Secretary
Former UK Justice Secretary, Jack Straw, calls for scrapping of defendants’ right to choose jury trial, in The University of Law’s latest podcast.
The third episode of The University of Law’s new video podcast series The Lord Chancellors, Where Politics meets Justice, was released this week, with journalist Frances Gibb talking to former UK Justice Secretary, Jack Straw.
During the podcast Jack Straw discusses the right of defendants to choose trial by jury, an approach he believes should be scrapped, saying the right is a “ridiculous anomaly” which enables defendants to “game” the system. His comments come as Shabana Mahmood, the current Justice Secretary, is under pressure to tackle record backlogs of cases awaiting trial.
In a wide-ranging interview, he also comments on former Justice Secretaries as well his wider political career under UK Prime Ministers, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.
