UPES becomes the first private university in India to join CERN Geneva’s prestigious CMS Collaboration
UPES has achieved a historic milestone by becoming a member of the globally renowned multi-billion-dollar Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Project at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, CERN, Geneva – one of the world’s most distinguished scientific collaborations in high-energy particle physics. The inclusion of UPES was approved by the CMS Collaboration Board, comprising representatives from over 300 institutes across 50+ countries, marking a major step forward in UPES’s global research journey.
The CMS experiment at CERN is internationally recognised for its role in the discovery of the Higgs Boson, which led to the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013. The project is expected to continue for the next 15-20 years, producing over 150 high-impact scientific publications annually. It will benefit students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members, allowing them opportunities to contribute to frontier research in particle physics, advanced technologies and large-scale global scientific projects.
The development follows sustained efforts by UPES faculty and leadership, including the induction of researchers with CMS experience and the successful presentation of the university’s proposal before the DAE–DST India–CERN committees. The partnership significantly strengthens UPES’s global research presence in advanced scientific research.
